Why do people get "bags" or "dark circles" under their eyes?

To begin with, these "bags" are physical features that occur beneath your eyes. The skin underneath looks like a bag, which makes it puffy. This usually occurs to people between the ages of 20-30+. As I continued to read this particular website, I learned that, believe it or not, we have fat stored in our bodies right underneath our eyes. As we age, our ligaments are not able to support the fat, making it droop down, looking like a bag. And as time passes by, the skin looses elasticity, causing the bags to grow. I finally scrolled down to the bottom of the page and I learned that these bags can be hereditary, but are usually caused nutrition and sleep, as well as other habits. Next, I looked at another website and I found out that there is another reason why these bags occur and why they occur. This website told me that the body fluids contained in the eye are settled overnight from sleep. This extra fluid can occur from extra liquid usage just before bed time or consumption of salty foods. As I finished the article, I learned that it is actually aging and extra liquid/salt consumption. Lastly, I read another article and it said that this "puffiness" is actually swelling in some cases and can lead to serious medical problem.

There are a few causes of dark circles under eyes.
The first cause is allergies. Since itchy eyes are part of allergies, when you itch your eyes you cause them to turn red and then leave marks. It also can be because they are puffy and watery most of the time when you have allergies.

Another cause of dark circles under your eyes is heredity. Dark cirles can be something that runs in the family. You may inherit it from your parents, or from other people in your family.

In addition to these two causes is lifestyle factors. This includes smoking, alchohol, or caffeinated sodas. Since these things are not good for your health, dark circles may be one of the side effects of them.

Nasal congestion is also another cause of dark circles.Nasal congestion occurs when when nasal tissues and blood vessels become swollen with excess fluid, causing a "stuffy" feeling. It causes dark circles because it dilates and darkens the veins that drain from your eyes to your nose.

Sun exposure is also a cause of dark circles under your eyes. This is because which prompts your body to produce more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color.

The last cause of dark circles is thinning skin and loss of fat. When your body loses a lot of body fat, it makes the reddish-blue blood vessels under your eyes more obvious. You may also look very sick.

These are a few causes of dark circles of under eyes, but I am sure that there are many more.

Many people get bags or dark circles under their eyes and if you're wondering, it is not unusual at all. Some ways of having this happen to you is: allergies, eczema, heredity, lifestyle factors(smoking, drinking alchol), nasal congestion, pigmentation irregularities, sun exposure, and thinning skin/loss of fat/collagen. With nasal congestion this darkens and dilates the veins that drain from your eyes to your nose, causing bags under your eyes. If you have a lot of sun exposure what happens is the sun tells your body to make more melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color. So having a lot of melanin also causes dark circles. Thinning skin/loss of fat/collagen is very common as you age. This makes the reddish-blue blood vessels under your eyes more obvious, again causing bags under your eyes. Technically, dark circles are round, uniform areas of pigmentation beneath each eye. It is in both men and women. More adults have it, but children can get bags under their eyes too. But don't worry about having dark circles under your eyes, remember its actually pretty common and there are many make up products to help hide them too.

The question is, "Why do people get "bags" or "dark circles" under their eyes. Well for starters, dark circles can be the cause of many things.

First, sun exposure can lead to dark circles under the eye. When you go out into the sun it brings the melanin levels in your skin up and makes those dark circles look even darker.

Next, you may think that when you don't get enough sleep, it may cause dark circles, but you are wrong. Actually, your not completely wrong, but you are mistaken about not getting ENOUGH sleep. When you don't sleep, your skin gets paler, therefore causing those dark circles to, once again, become even more noticeable.

Another reason why people get dark circles is because of allergies. Certain reactions in your skin from the allergies can most definitely cause dark circles along with you rubbing your eyes. Also, when you are younger, dark circles under your eyes can be a sign of allergies, helping doctors pinpoint who has it and who doesn't.

Next, age can affect your dark circles under your eyes. When you grow older, your skin becomes more thin that it was when you were a kid or a young adult. This can make it seem as if your dark circles are even darker.

Lastly, nutrition is another cause of dark circles. Even though this is a very rare case, it has happened to people who have poor diets. For instant, if you don't get enough vitamins, dark circles may appear. Usually changing to a more healthy diet will make those dark circles disappear in no time.

Well, as you can see, there are many ways of getting dark circles under your eyes. Next time you get dark circles under your eyes, remember what you can do to prevent them and get rid of them!

The reason that people get "bags" or "dark circles" under their eyes is because of aging. Under your eye, there is usually natural fat. As you grow older, the ligaments that are used to hold that fat become weaker, which then makes the fat push out. This is the "beauty" of human aging. Another reason you can have bags is if you have allergies, which makes the swelling then stretch your skin. Once it deflates, that skin starts to "bag".

Okay, I would write a little more, but my computer just froze and quit on me without warning, so here's a quicker version of what I was going to say:

@Green Guy: Bravo for posting consistently! Here's tip to step it up a notch: try listing some specific terms for what you described: what would be the medical term for the fat stored under our eyes? Or the "puffiness"? But don't forget to explain it for us medically illiterate folk! Or, you could elaborate more on something you found interesting: what exactly is that "extra fluid" and why doesn't it get digested properly? And why does it go under our eyes? Why not someplace else, like our bellies? It's admittedly a little off- topic, but if you find it interesting or intriguing, go for it!

@Magnolia Blossom- Nice job listing all those causes! If you want to put a spin on it, try elaborating on one- you mentioned that you can inherit it. So why not elaborate on genetics? Once again, it may be off-topic, but, at least in my opinion, that's part of the point of the question- to let you find something you're interested.

@Little Bit- Awesome pseudonym! I wonder who will be Big Bit? Like Magnolia Blossom, why not elaborate on one to put a better spin on it? Also, you state a lot of information. However, (and Sunnyd may go over this in class one day when she gets aggravated over lab reports, I know she did last year)you sound a little robotic-like. We want to hear what you think of it too- anything you find shocking? How does what you found weigh in on your prior knowledge? (By the way, if you're looking for extra credit, you forgot a link) Do you have questions or comments on the stuff you found- or even what others found?

@njguy- Nice answer, so I can talk about sources. What is the motive of the website you picked, darkcircles.net? Who are the authors? Based on these two facts, would you judge this to be a good source or a bad source? Not to be pick on you or anything, because a lot of sources are pretty faulty anyway, but I don't really feel like picking on your answer, so I'll be annoying and pick on your source.

@pinto- you mentioned that bags under your eyes are part of the "beauty" of human aging. That seems like an intriguing topic- what else falls under the "beauty" of human aging? Try aiming for the odd or unknown here- for instance, did you know our cells are programmed to die? You could go into an entire discussion on the possibility (or impossibility) of immortality on this! Would it be possible to create a "fountain of youth"- a medicine that can reverse, if not death, the effects of aging?

Good job to all! And to all a good night! (Sorry, a little corny)

There is many ways why you get bags or dark circles under your eys. One wa you get dark circles under your eyes is Lack of sleep which makes your skin pale, which emphasizes your dark circles. Another way you can get dark circles under your eyes is Heredity and heredity is the primary cause of dark circles. Lastly, you get dark cirlces becasue of allergies, allergies frequently cause the eyes to feel itchy.Dark circles and bags are caused when the ligaments of a person start to weaken and allow some of the fat deposits under the eyes to come out through the skin, which in turn creates a bag. Dark circles are caused when these bags cast a shadow under the eye and make a dark ring appear.

Many people believe that dark circles are caused because of lack of sleep and because they are getting old. When you only get little amount of sleep, your skin under the eyes loses moisture and the light shows purplish color under your eyes. Also, when you get old, your skin tense to get thinner and become more transparent. This causes the vein under the skin to show. All of these are true, however, there are lot more reasons why. It can be because of unbalanced diet, allergy, heredity, or just the reflection of the light. If you are lacking of nutrients, you might get dark circles or sometimes, it is an allergy reaction. For some people, the reason is heredity. Those people have thinner skin under their eyes and their veins under the eyes show. You can also get dark circles from just different lights. Lights can reflect on the skin differently and make it look purple. These are the reasons why you might get a dark circle under your eyes.
