Why are balanced equations important in the field of Chemistry?
Remember to use a good source when answering this question (yes you can even use your text book! but not sites like Yahoo Answers...I'm sure you guys can tell the difference...)
Also, as extra practice, I will be posting questions from some of the sheets that Sunnyd gave to us to help us review for the test!
Here is the first question!
Is this balanced equation correct?
H2 + O2 -> H2O

Sites, not sights. You know, I have tons and tons of chem stuff, so if anyone wants some above and beyond chem lessons and problems...
Hello, the reason why balanced equations are important in chemistry is because it ensures that both sides of the chemical equation are correct. For instant, you must be able to put in correct coeffients and subscipts or else the chemical compound that you wanted to create will not be present, but a different chemical. If you mixed Hydrogen 3 with Oxygen 2, it would not create water because in water there are only two hydrogens, not three. See how such a small change could make such a large impact?

It is essential to have a balanced equation becuase you have to be able to determine the quantities of the reactants or products. In addition to this, you cant start with, for instant, hydrogen 3 and oxygen 2 and end with hydrogen 2 and oxygen 4. The amount you start with, is the amount you end with. Also a balanced equation assures that the law of conservation is followed. Therefore, as njguy320 said, one small change in chemical equations can have a large influence.
